The Choice is Ours
During the lazy and lethargic evening hours, a writer named Monica was busy at her desk working on an article. Feeling extremely tired, she began to scroll through her social media accounts. And she found something that made her upset. Seeing pictures of her friend’s newly bought luxurious apartment, whose rent was paid by her parents, she felt an intense pang of jealousy. This was because she was finding it extremely difficult to manage her own expenses despite trying very hard.
A few days later, she went on a date with her friend. She felt an instant connection with the other person. But when her friend described his emotionally and financially well-off childhood, a wave of envy swept over her because hers was the complete opposite.
These two incidents overwhelmed her with an uncomfortable feeling. This was not malice, but a sad lament over the missing pieces of her life.
Her experiences highlight a contrast between envy and jealousy. Although they seem to be synonymous, these emotions have a subtle difference.
Jealousy is often very destructive in nature. An individual who is jealous tends to hate the joy of others and would like nothing more than to wipe out that joy. Envy, on the other hand, comes from a desire for what one does not have.
One threatens disruption. But the other is a painful regret.
Not every person is full of animosity. But envy is widespread because it’s driven by universal human comparison and the frenzy of social media.
They show off what they have accomplished. The audience, which is swayed by the dreamlike depiction of life in those photographs, starts comparing it with its own life, which can be harsh and unfair.
Finally, this feeling of inadequacy gives rise to envy, the same which Monica felt.
Though this is harmless, it shouldn’t be ignored. Its constant suppression can lead to bitterness, anxiety, the withering of relationships, and, in the end, an emotional breakdown.
Envy is the ulcer that may slowly develop into the wound of jealousy.
It should be recognized and addressed. People should understand that life is a unique, incomplete puzzle. They cannot have everything. Rather, they should be grateful for what they already possess. Each person should rise above comparisons and accept certain gaps and limitations as a part of life.
This acknowledgment adds to self-awareness. Moreover, envy can be transformed into a powerful force. If people yearn for something, they should work hard to achieve it.
So, next time you are envious of someone, endeavor to match their accomplishments rather than harboring ill intentions.
Jealousy causes loss on both sides. But envy can become a motivation to soar high.
