Is It A Vintage Resurgence or a Perspective Shift?
Gen-Z – A Generation that has witnessed an innovative revolution in technology from their early days. Technology is the essence of their lives, forming a part of their day-to-day routines.
However, a digital-first generation does not imply that they are fully engrossed in their ‘reel’ world. In fact, growing up amid economic instability, climatic crises, automation, and health emergencies like Covid-19, this generation has witnessed a tough time and continues to do so…
In an era of great fragmentation and systemic fragility, volatility has become the norm for them.
But the attitude of the younger generation toward the digital landscape is now changing. Mental pressure, anxiety, and burnout due to the pressure of their virtual world are making them rethink their choices. So, instead of rapid technological adoption, Gen-Z is embracing the traditional hobbies of their ancestors.
A change that has been termed grannycore.
Across the US and UK, young people are skipping late-night parties and social media to take up their grandparents’ hobbies. They are ditching clubs and cafes to spend their time knitting, pottery, gardening, and solving puzzles.
All statistics point to this reality. The number of people participating in flower decorating courses in the UK has grown fourfold. Enrollments for puzzle competitions in America have jumped two-and-a-half times. The birdwatching hobby of British youth has risen from 60,000 in 2018 to over 450,000.
The irony is that this change brings out the importance of positive family bonds and a peaceful mind, something that has been overlooked by the older generation, since it was already an important part of their life.
In an age where time is efficiency, and nothing is permanent, Gen-Z has settled for a slow lifestyle, which has its own rhythm. This allows them to embrace the beauty of it, rather than rushing through it.
It’s not nostalgia. It’s a rebellion that highlights a different crisis.
Technology has made things easy for them. But all these conveniences come at the expense of their mental and emotional health. Coping with technological advancement needs constant learning and adaptability. And this has turned out to be quite overwhelming.
By adopting grannycore, they aren’t giving up on the present. They are exchanging –
Transition for Tranquility
Stress for Stillness
Pace for Peace
The turnaround is revolutionary. It shows that there can be times when the only solution lies in looking back. By revisiting the past, they are changing their future.
