You Need Yourself

 

Helping people is defined as being kind and empathic towards other individuals. The importance of this virtue comes from the fact that it makes the functioning of society possible, builds good relationships, and creates an enabling environment.

 

However, while extending help to those around them and looking after their needs, some people overlook their own well-being.

 

That is where the idea of self-care comes into play. It refers to the activities people undertake to support their physical, mental, and emotional health.

 

The term is a multi-dimensional one having various aspects. This includes engaging in activities that make us happy. Activities like painting, reading books, gardening, or traveling provide a break from our hectic lives and help reduce stress.

 

Life moves very fast these days. People often go from one task to the next without stopping. In the middle of all this, many of us forget basic things like getting enough rest and eating meals on time. Over time, this can affect our health and well-being.

 

Self-care means following healthy habits like sufficient sleep, mindful eating, good hygiene, and regular exercise to remain fit and disease-free.

 

It encourages us to give ourselves the space to acknowledge our feelings. If we are troubled by painful memories, we can share them with trusted individuals or quietly express them in diaries to let go of grief and begin to heal.

 

It allows us to express difficult emotions that have been buried under the sands of time but not forgotten.

Good relationships are another key to holistic well-being. Building new connections, spending meaningful time with loved ones, and maintaining healthy boundaries are also part of self-care.

 

Self-care is important because it helps us recognize and respond to our own needs. Also, just as a lamp without oil cannot light up its surroundings, how can we care for others when we neglect ourselves?

 

But it should not be confused with self-absorption. Self-care creates a balance between nurturing ourselves and lending a helping hand. Self-absorption is a mere preoccupation with our own thoughts and interests, with no consideration for others.

 

It is not a luxury but a simple necessity. It is about showing ourselves the compassion we deserve. When burdened by responsibilities, it reminds us to take care of ourselves.

 

So, do what you need to do, because in the end, you must also be there for yourself.
